The photograph below shows my fireplace mantel, along with an assortment of random objects. Composited somewhere amongst the real-world objects is a synthetic object rendered with light more or less identical to that found in the original scene.

Can you spot the computer-generated image?

  1. It’s gotta be that red bear sitting in the middle of the mantle.

  3. Sorry, Sheri, that’s actually real! What’s more, it was a gift from you.

    Good guess, though!

Robin, I can see why you’d think it was E. J. Smith but I’m afraid you’re also incorrect.

  6. Oh for fucks sake. You all think you’re funny by guessing the wrong ones?! Seriously! *screams while closing eyes hard*- JESUS! And, the TEAPOT’s lighting is not identical! It’s shadow is too dark. There’s more ambient/refracted light in the room! JESUS! Maybe if you’d turned off the camera flash, it might have looked more believable.

  7. Crommo, please tell me the time you spent analysing the image didn’t make you late for tonight’s genius convention.

  13. I am a cup of coffee. Who are you?

  14. Me, Hoevenaars? I’m an excited Collingwood supporter. Imagine how MASSIVE next week will be if Collingwood wins tonight …

I doubt the Pies would go on to beat Geelong but if they did, it would be the most glorious day (since October 6th, 1990) of my football-attending life.

  15. Are you afraid?

    Comment by Ed — September 15, 2007 @ 1:23 am | Reply

  16. Not afraid, Edwah, just pessimistic. I really don’t expect Collingwood to win against the Cats but hopefully it’ll be close. To be honest, I’m baffled as to how the Pies even managed to get this far. For most of the year, I was amazed that we were in the Top 8 and when the finals got underway, I thought for sure we’d be bundled out in the first week.

Regardless of the result, Friday night is going to be epic. Can you even begin to imagine the atmosphere for that crowd? We should go up to Melbourne early with as many Geelong and Collingwood supporter friends as we can find and have a great meal at a restaurant, then stroll on over to the MCG. I want to get there at least half an hour before the game starts and just savour the occasion.

Have you made any plans yet? No Half-Cat duties, I trust?

    Hoevenaars, what about you?

  17. Lame.

Yeah early stuff sounds good. Although I can’t promise I won’t cross the line and make grossly inappropriate sledges. But if you’re willing to take that risk then sure, I’m up for it.
